Atlantic is a town located on Core Sound on the far eastern side of Carteret County about 27 miles from Beaufort by way of U.S.Highway 70, which has its eastern terminus in the town. First settled about 1740, the area was known as Hunting Quarters susposedly because it was a principal hunting area for the Tuscarora and Coree Indians. Originally, Hunting Quarters included most of the area from what is now Davis to Cedar Island. The commuity was accessible only by water until the early 20th century.
